The Bournemouth Chamber Music Society . . . is very pleased to welcome the Emerald Ensemble to perform the fifth concert in its 2005-2006 season. The concert is to be held at Talbot Heath School at 3.00pm Saturday, 4th March and tickets priced £12.50 (students £6.25) will be available on the door or telephone 01202 658921.
The Emerald Ensemble is a lively and exciting chamber orchestra, able to perform a variety of repertoire that extends from Baroque to Contemporary Classical, Jazz and Tango. The centerpiece of the Emerald Ensemble’s concert provides a rare opportunity to hear perhaps the most famous and popular of all Haydn’s Symphonies, the “Surprise”, performed as a stunning chamber work, in the arrangement made by the 18th century impresario and violinist Johann Salomon. Salomon promoted the immensely popular concerts given by Haydn on his visits to London. An apocryphal story claims that the “surprise” – a sudden very loud chord in the middle of a very quiet and famous tune – was intended to wake up the ladies of the audience who had perhaps dozed off after over-indulgence during the interval. Hopefully the tea and biscuits available during the interval of our concert will not cause similar problems! The concert also includes Arvo Pärt’s popular and atmospheric “Fratres”, one of the most easily accessible of late 20th century compositions. Rossini’s 1st String Sonata, and a flute sextet by John Mash complete a varied, balanced and interesting programme.
