As recommended in the Alistair Sawday
"Bed & Breakfast Guide for Garden Lovers" book, Lytchett Hard is owned
by David & Elizabeth Collinson :
One fascinating acre adjoins a reeded inlet of Poole harbour and their
own SSSI where, if youre lucky, youll spot a Dartford Warbler
among the gorse.
The garden has been created from scratch over the past 30 years and carefully
designed to make the most of the views over heathland - haunt of two species
of lizard - and water. Liz is a trained horticulturalist and she and David
have capitalised on the mild weather here to grow tender plants; copious
additions of compost and horse manure have improved the sandy soil. These
tender treasures thrive gloriously and are unusually large - youre
greeted by a huge phormium in the pretty entrance garden by the drive; cordyline
and hibiscus do well, too.
Acid-lovers are happy, so there are fine displays of camellias and rhododendrons
among hosts of daffodil and tulips once the sweeps of snowdrops have finished.
Three borders are colour-themed, each representing a wedding anniversary:
silver, pearl and ruby. Kitchen gardeners will be knocked out by the seriously
good vegetable garden.
Play croquet on the large lawn, explore the private woodland where David
has created winding paths, relax in the shade of the gazebo or in the warmth
of the working conservatory, admire the many unusual plants or simply sit
back and enjoy the colour and interest around you... and that shimmering
view.
